If Absent:
Get Handouts and work on case study
Read and study entire section on carbohydrates
HW:
Finish Multiple Choice Questions and Food Label Questions
Skip Multiple Choice #10 and 11
Fill in notes sheet portion discussing carbohydrates
Note:
Recall that large complex sugars (aka polysaccharides - starch and cellulose) are to large to simply pass through the cell membrane, therefore they must be broken down through hydrolysis by enzymes. If by chance these enzymes are not present (or in small numbers) in your intestines, then microscopic organisms in your large intestine use the undigested complex sugars as food. The resulting breakdown of the complex sugar during cellular respiration will release gas, thus resulting in intestinal irritation and flatchulence.

Water Activity Lab
In Class:
Covered Topics on Water.
Several Handouts were given as study tools
Reviewed Objectives Sheet
If Absent:
Get a copy of each water handout
HW:
Water Quiz Tomorrow - Review Study Guide
Special Note for Quiz:
Reread "Water is Solvent" page 27-28
-Make sure to look at Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic - I did not get to cover those specifically in class
-The reason water is such a good solvent is due to the polarity (polar covalent bonds) NOT due to cohesion or adhesion (hydrogen bonding) - all other properties are reliant on cohesion and adhesion
-The reason water is polar covalent has to do with the fact that the oxygen and hydrogen do not share the electrons equally (larger oxygen has more protons and thus attracts the shared electrons more than hydrogen, resulting in the partial negative charge on oxygen and partial positive charge on hydrogen)
Next Time:
work on papers - Due Monday
